I was in a teenager in high school in the 90's when I first noticed Birkenstocks and, back then, even though so many friends were wearing them, I thought they were the ugliest sandals I had ever seen. Today, I still think they're ugly to be honest but they're coming out with some styles now that I don't mind so much.
The older I get the more I realize I just don't care for cheap flip-flops anymore. You know the ones--they are ridiculously cute but have zero support and make your knees ache at the end of the day, and you have to buy a new pair every single year because the soles wear down in only a couple of months? Yeah those ones.
Well, this year I decided to be a bit more wise in my flip-flop choice and look for comfort, support, longevity, and style. So imagine my surprise when my research in finding such a flip-flop lead me back to the brand I despised, Birkenstock.
This weekend I stumbled upon the "Women's GIZEH shiny snake black thong sandal" at my local SoftMoc and I was pretty much sold. It had everything I was looking for in a proper flip-flop (although, in this case I'll hereby call these "thongs" because they neither flip nor flop when walking, which is an extra bonus).
So far I'm in love with these thongs but they do need a breaking-in period it seems. I did some more research and I stumbled upon THIS blog that offers up some good advice on how to do just that. This woman really loves her Birks and her entire blog is dedicated to them! She's got some great videos on caring of your Birks as well so, if you're like me and a new user, she's got some great tips.
In the end I've decided that since Birkenstock have been around since 1774 and still have a loyal following, so I guess they must be doing something right and it won't hurt to give them a try.
Do you own a pair of Birkenstocks? What do you think of them? Did it take you long to break them in? Answer in the comment section below!
